Arboricultural Supervision and Site Monitoring

Your local authority may require periodic inspections of tree protection measures or mandate that complex operations near trees be supervised by an arboriculturist.

As your Arboricultural Clerk of Works (ACoW), we provide an advisory and reporting role, offering comprehensive guidance on tree protection during construction and diligent oversight of all tree-related matters.

PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT

A system of construction site monitoring is often required for protecting trees during construction on high-profile sites and sites where trees are of particular importance due to their arboricultural, landscape, or cultural value. It can also be required on sites where trees are protected by tree preservation orders.

Construction site monitoring can take the form of regular visits throughout the entire construction period to ensure protection measures are being correctly implemented. This will involve a designated Arboriculturist, such as Urban Tree Management, reporting to the relevant local authority and giving advice should the tree protection measures require alteration.

Construction site monitoring may only be required for particular operations such as excavation within root protection areas where the result of construction activity cannot be adequately predicted in advance. Urban Tree Management can be called upon at any point during construction should an event occur that is not within the scope of the arboricultural impact assessment or the site-specific method statement.

  • Construction Monitoring with Aerial Surveys

Once a development scheme has been consented, drones can be used to provide onsite monitoring of the progress of developments. Many of those involved in development projects can benefit from such monitoring:

    • Planners are able to confirm that the development complies with the consent
    • Contractors can monitor progresswork with the design team to ensure that trees are a core consideration in design evolution, seeking to help use trees to provide a Sense of Place and provide value to a development scheme.

  • Discharging Planning Conditions with Arboricultural Site Supervision

The project arboriculturist will supervise or may be required to supervise the following activities, depending on the specific site requirements:

    • Site Access, Movement, and Parking of Construction Traffic
    • Construction Yard and Storage Areas
    • Barriers, Ground Protection, and Signage
    • Recommended Tree Works
    • Changes in Soil Levels within Root Protection Areas (RPAs)
    • Excavation within RPAs
    • Compaction within RPAs
    • Installation or Removal of Hard Surfaces within RPAs
    • Soft Landscaping within RPAs
    • Work within Areas of Designated Structural Landscaping
    • Inspection of Retained Trees
    • Inspection of New Trees
